Our mission is to make a positive difference in poverty stricken schools in the San Diego area for children between the ages of 5 and 10 years old. We provide emotional support, ideas, and educational equipment to enlighten the children’s minds and bodies. We assist the schools by providing new desks, computers, books and playground equipment. We provide new educational programs and sponsor field trips for the children so they can experience new possibilities outside their poor and less than desirable living conditions.

Adopt-A-Classroom, formed in 2005 by Ms. Ellen Kiss, is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that focuses on school children from kindergarten to 5th grade.

Ms. Kiss wanted to give back to her community by creating a non-profit organization that would support disadvantaged (Title 1) schools in San Diego. The programs are designed to provide children with the resources to improve their health and grades. The support programs reward children’s academic and attendance achievements.

More than 600 children have been helped with basic needs since the program started in 2005. Children are provided with school supplies, books, exercise equipment, clothing and emotional support. Items are not just given away. Everything is a reward for homework, attendance, recycling, or other good deeds. The organization strives to teach accountability, and provide physical and emotional nurturing.

Adopt-A-Classroom has primarily concentrated its efforts at Euclid Elementary School in central San Diego. The results have been outstanding with student’s standardized testing results increasing by 20 percentile points. For the past three years, attendance and punctuality have steadily improved.

Adopt-A-Classroom San Diego (AACSD) was granted a non-profit status 501(c)(3) on December 30, 2005. The Employer Identification Number is 76-0802829.
